Health Insurance for Smokers at Macys will Cost More

As of July 1st, Macy’s Department Store is charging an additional surcharge on the health insurance of employees who smoke. This is not really a surprise. Increasingly, year after year, health care costs have spiraled up. Companies are desperately looking for ways to control those costs.

Bloomberg’s Business Week lists some of the health issues associated with smoking, and in their article, according to the CDC, “Tobacco use is responsible for one in five U.S. deaths.” Do you know that some employers will not hire someone who smokes? Those companies want to completely avoid the health problems that smoking creates.
