Inland counties addressing Asian-American mental health needs

Thirty years ago, Amy Sivilay and her family escaped from war-torn Laos by crossing the jungle and a corpse-strewn Mekong River into Thailand, where they spent months in a refugee camp.

The Riverside woman’s mother suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder after the ordeal. Sivilay, 39, was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, which she believes stems in part from a past that still troubles her.

“There’s a lot in my childhood that is so deep,” she said.
