California Attorney General Files Brief in Defense of Health Care Reform

Attorney General Kamala D. Harris has signed a friend-of-the-court brief in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit strongly defending the constitutionality of federal health care reform and urging the court to uphold the law. “Not only is the minimum coverage provision necessary to carry out Congress’ goals of lowering the costs of medical care and expanding insurance coverage, it is a proper exercise of federal authority that does not alter the essential attributes of state sovereignty,” the amicus brief states. “The Affordable Care Act continues a longstanding and necessary partnership between the states and the federal government in the healthcare policy arena.”
