Organization and Program DescriptionLupus LA, the west coast division of the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation, promotes lupus awarenessand education, funds novel research and provides a variety of programs and service for peoplewith lupus and their families helping them to better manage their disease and enhance their qualityof life. Our current programs include: bilingual support groups for adults, children and familymembers patient education, peer support, referrals to medical specialists and assistance navigatingthe entitlement and benefits process; emergency financial assistance grants that enable familiesaffected by lupus to purchase life-saving medication and pay overdue bills; and enrichment grantsfor children allowing families with limited financial resources to provide activities such as after-school lessons in art, music and swimming.
Position Summary: Lupus LA will establish the Lupus Cooperative of Los Angeles, a chronic disease managementprogram aimed at reducing the racial disparities in lupus treatment and diagnosis. This project willbuild upon our current programs and extend our reach to the over 60,000 people living with lupus inSouthern California.
The Outreach Coordinator will be responsible for staffing two cooperative sites in the Greater LosAngeles Area. The Coordinator will conduct public awareness activities at the community level andoutreach to patients to coordinate their on-going medical and psychosocial care.
The Coordinator will also facilitate and co-supervise support groups and design/implement patient workshops.Additionally, the Coordinator will assist with Lupus LA’s other patient programs including annualpatient conferences, marathon and bike events, and fundraising events. Finally, the coordinator willplay an active role in data collection and evaluation.
Qualifications• Demonstrated ability to conduct community outreach, organize at the grass roots level, andimplement successful community programs.• Excellent communication skills, analytic ability and computer literacy.• Self-starter with strong entrepreneurial and consensus building skills.• Flexibility and willingness to work some nights and weekends• Bi-lingual Spanish or Chinese• A sense of humor• BA necessary/Masters in public health/social services preferred.
