Asian Pacific American Legislative Staff Intern Reception

Dear Community Friend:

Greetings!
On behalf of the Asian Pacific American Legislative Staff (APALS) Network, we are inviting you to our organization’s signature event – the Annual Intern Reception.  APALS is an informal nonpartisan group of legislative staff members who work for elected officials at the federal, state, and local levels of government.  Our mission is to increase the influence and participation of Asian and Pacific Islander Americans (APIA), and to provide the community greater access to all levels of government.

Established in 1986, APALS works to increase the awareness of and response to issues critical to the APIA community.  We also strive to provide professional development for our membership to develop effective leadership that will positively contribute to the needs of Asian Pacific Islander Americans.  In addition, APALS is a resource for community members who seek elected, appointed, or staff positions in government.  All of our work is done by committed volunteers who genuinely care about the community at large.

The Intern Reception is hosted for high school and college students interning at legislative offices and various nonprofit organizations.  The FREE reception is an opportunity for students to network with elected officials, staffers and other professionals.  The purpose of the event is to encourage the next generation of leaders to stay engaged and involved with the social and political development of our diverse Southern California communities.  Over the years, our Intern Reception has grown to 300 attendees and has received extensive coverage from the Chinese, Korean, Filipino, and Japanese media.  Our past keynote speakers have included State Controller John Chiang, Assemblymember Ted Lieu, Actress Tamilyn Tomita and  movie director Justin Lin.  Free food will be provided as well as raffle prizes and goodie-bags.

This year’s Intern Reception will be held on Thursday, July 15, 2010, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the East West Players (Aratani) Courtyard located at 120 Judge John Aiso St. Los Angeles, CA 90012.  Our confirmed speakers include Legalzoom CEO John Suh and LAFD Battalion Chief Emile Mack.  The program will begin at 6:00 pm but we encourage attendees to arrive early to allow interns for the chance to network.

Please RSVP via e-mail at APALSRSVP@gmail.com by Tuesday, July 13, 2010 and don’t forget to invite your interns and fellow staff as well. We look forward to seeing you there!!!
