Dear friends and allies,
Assemblymember Eng has introduced AB 1737, which would ensure that specified state agencies collect and publish data that are disaggregated into additional Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander ethnic groups, as currently reported by the U.S. Census. This measure is sponsored by the Asian and Pacific Islanders California Action Network.
In April 2009, our office released a report in collaboration with the University of California Asian American and Pacific Islander Policy Multi-Campus Research Program on “The State of Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Health in California.” The report is the first comprehensive study of its kind that shows the health profile of not only Chinese, Japanese, and Korean ethnic groups living in California but details the need to disaggregate the data for other AANHPI subgroups.
While overall data may show that AANHPI are doing better than average on certain social indicators, data that is separated out by ethnic group clearly shows that certain communities, especially among Pacific Islander and Southeast Asian ethnic groups, have some of the greatest needs, including some of the highest poverty rates and lowest educational attainment rates in California. Laotians, Cambodians, and Hmong, for example, have some of the highest poverty rates of all ethnic groups.
