Community meeting on 10/20 to discuss U.S. DHHS funding opportunity

Dear Colleague,

The LA County Department of Public Health Division of Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention invites you to participate in a community meeting on Tuesday, October 20 from 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. to discuss a major new funding opportunity from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. A total of $373 million will be awarded to 30 – 40 jurisdictions across the country to implement policy and environmental change over a two-year period in two focus areas: 1) obesity prevention, nutrition, and physical activity and 2) tobacco control and prevention.  Award amounts for the largest jurisdictions will be in the range of $5-10 million per year for two years.  The emphasis in the funding announcement is to create jurisdiction-wide policy change in the focus areas.  A link to the funding opportunity announcement can be found on the Grants.gov website: http://www07.grants.gov/search/search.do;jsessionid=BlvDKKQNJnQ6LPnx4l561FvydgKJB9TTpPT6Wr84hZ1ZjJ2jL99l!2132672093?oppId=49571&mode=VIEW.

At the meeting, DPH will provide an overview of the funding opportunity announcement (FOA) and our process for developing the obesity prevention and tobacco control and prevention grant applications. In addition, DPH will solicit participant input into how we can develop the most comprehensive, coordinated, and competitive proposal to create policy and environmental change across LA County.  Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions and will learn how cities, community-based organizations, school districts and other stakeholders can be involved.  Because of the large interest in these proposals and space limitations at the location, please select ONE representative from your organization to attend.  RSVP to Dior Hildebrand atdhildebrand@ph.lacounty.gov or 213-351-7813.
